Have you ever watched The Shawshank Redemption? Remember that one scene there, when Tim Robbins locked himself up in the radio room of the prison, and played a record (of two Italian women singing) on the turntable for the whole prison to hear? Not one of them understood the meaning of the song, but they were just mesmerized, transfixed with the music coming from those make-do loud speakers. Not one of them understood, and yet the song left them thinking deeply, removed from the everydayness of a prisoner’s life.
Got the same effect last Saturday, upon watching the Lipa Choral Ensemble perform at the Cinema 3 of SM City Lipa, more particulary from this song. Loosely translated as “You Are,” Eres Tú speaks of something which does not need to be known, but rather, felt… understood. I had hoped I could explain better, but I believe everything I will say will be an understatement to the power of this song. So here it is.
Eres Tú
Words and music by Juan Carlos Calderón
ENGLISH TRANSLATION:
Eres Tú (You Are)
Like a promise, you are, you are
Like a summer morning
Like a smile, you are, you are
Like that, like that, you are
All my hope, you are, you are
Like fresh rain in my hands
Like a strong breeze, you are, you are; like that, like that, you are
You are like the water of my fountain (something like that, you are)
You are the fire of my fireplace
You are like the fire of my bonfire
You are the wheat of my bread
Like my poem, you are, you are
Like a guitar in the night
My whole horizon you are, you are; like that, like that, you are
You are like the water of my fountain (something like that, you are)
You are the fire of my fireplace
You are like the fire of my bonfire
You are the wheat of my bread
You are…
